Going to California

Leaving Las Vegas, we went to California by car. During the journey, my son and his classmate took turns driving. The car was new, which was driven only 200 miles before hired. The condition of highways in Nevada was very good. We were comfortable in it without feeling any bump when the car worked at the speed of 80 miles an hour.

Las Vegas was called an oasis in the desert. But the scene between inside the city and outside the city made a vast difference. Desert regions were along the sides of the highways. Only a small amount of plants unnamed appeared on the ground. High cactuses were mixed up with withered grass in sight once in a while. On faraway mountains, not even a blade of grass grew, with a scene of desolation.

Entering California, views along the sides of the roads changed. Green Plants greeted the eye everywhere. A freight train wriggled far away, which drew 110 cars (货车车皮). The highways in California were wider. There were five lanes on the highways averagely, seven lanes on some ways. But the condition of roads was not as good as that in Nevada. Many trade markets for vehicles beside the roads could be seen when closing to Los Angeles. It’s said that there were more cars in California, which were cheaper.

It took about four hours to reach Los Angeles by car. When getting out of the car in front of the Homestead Hotel, we felt very comfortable with a gentle breeze blowing to us. They said that it’s like spring all the year round in California because of its pleasant weather. Sure enough, it’s really true.

The aunt of my son’s classmate, who lived in Los Angeles, met us in the evening and treated us to dinner in a Chinese restaurant called “Yunnanguoqiao Garden”. We ate some typical local dish from Yunnan and Guiyang in China as the classmate’s parents of my son were from Guiyang city in Guizhou province. Looking all round, I found that not only guests, but also waiters and waitress in the restaurant were all Chinese. Turning the round plate in the center of the table, while eating Chinese food, I heard the guests next to our table speaking Beijng dialect. Where was I? Was I in the United States then? I suddenly puzzled.

What a happy coincidence! My son happened to have a meal in this restaurant when he went sight-seeing in Los Angeles three years before. It seemed that the restaurant was so famous that local Chinese students and overseas Chinese often went there.(the end)
